Despite the influx of new enterprises, the basic industries of coal, steel and tinplate still dominated the industrial scene. During the war years the coalfield slowly deteriorated, as, after the end of the ‘phoney’ war, the coal export trade collapsed swiftly, and the number of workers diminished, especially in 1940 as young coalface workers joined the colours, while others simply transferred to other industries or new regions. The run-down ceased temporarily in 1941, as some mines reopened in response to the demand for coal as a source of power.

The low prices of Portuguese slates were made possible by the low wages paid to quarrymen in Portugal. 5 per cent of British slates had been exported, but in 1932 the figure had fallen to 5 per cent, the export trade having been adversely affected by the high tariffs on imported slates imposed after 1918 by Germany, Australia and Ireland.
