Despite the influx of new enterprises, the basic industries of coal, steel and tinplate still dominated the industrial scene. During the war years the coalfield slowly deteriorated, as, after the end of the ‘phoney’ war, the coal export trade collapsed swiftly, and the number of workers diminished, especially in 1940 as young coalface workers joined the colours, while others simply transferred to other industries or new regions. The run-down ceased temporarily in 1941, as some mines reopened in response to the demand for coal as a source of power.
