Serov joined the World of Art group when it was created in the late 1890s, and soon gained undisputed authority among its members. What united them all was a predilection for style, monumental scope, and consummate craftsmanship. Serov’s art was an organic blend of tradition and innovation. That is why those who cherished the traditions of 19th-century Russian painting were gratified by his deeply realistic, at times almost Repinesque, approach to portraiture. As for the innovators, they accepted him as one of their own because he constantly sought that which had yet to be achieved.

This was the style seemingly adopted by the Serov of the 1890s and early 1900s, who enriched it with his own striking individuality.
