SEM micrographs illustrate vertical variations in micro fabric within the laminated shale. Preferred platy particle orientation dominates in clay-rich lamina I and 3 (Bl and B3). Between them is a 2 mm thick silt-dominated pyrite-bearing zone (see B2). In this zone clay is randomly oriented owing to the higher silt content (arrows at silt grains); however, this randomness may also be produced by rapid deposition of flocculated clay. Micrographs show the fabric and size variations between layers, which cannot be observed readily by xradiography.
